D. Trump, American Grifter | Destroying the Presidency
What do you think Donald Trump would have done with his life if he wasn’t born a millionaire? I entertain myself with this question and have come up with some possibilities:
Car salesman – I picture him working the suckers who have the misfortune of coming onto his lot. I think Trump would be the biggest name in cars in Queens, NY, his hometown, if he hadn’t been born with millions of dollars worth of prime real estate to gamble instead. He’s a born salesman and self-promoter. Can you picture the commercials with Trump dressed up as the Statue of Liberty, standing in a car lot and telling the good people of New York that they won’t find a better deal anywhere?
Pit Boss – Speaking of gambling, Mr. Trump has a high tolerance for risk and a “sucker is born every minute” credo. That makes him ideally suited to be a casino pit boss.
Plumber – I don’t know why this one comes to mind, except I can picture Trump plunging toilets. Something about “Trump” and “shit” just go together in my mind.
But there’s one career path that matches the man and his personality to a T. That fits him like a tight leather burglar’s glove:
Grifting is the art of separating people from their money through deception. They gain your confidence and gain access to your bank account then slip away in the dark night. They lie to your face while reaching around back for your wallet.
Trump is more than a simple conman. He has elevated the con game to the level of art form, to the level of grifter. He is the Great American Grifter.
Ask people who have done business with him over the decades. He has a long, long record of screwing people over to make a buck. Of making promises he never keeps. Of somehow coming out ahead when everyone else takes it in the ass.
I read the results of a poll asking Americans to share the first word that comes to mind when they think of Trump. “Idiot” and “incompetent” were the top two responses, but I think those impressions, while true, sell the man short. Tell a grifter that he or she is a common thief and it might be the one time you see the person miffed. Grifters are professionals at making people believe shit that ain’t true. They are devious, not idiots. They say it’s your fault for trusting them. It’s a dog eat dog world and they are highly competent at being the eater, not the eaten.
Trump is a clown who is too arrogant to care about the damage he is doing to America and the world. It’s our fault for electing him — for even putting him on the same stage with other qualified (and many unqualified) candidates. The grifter motto is, “if you’re stupid enough to open the door, I got the balls to step on in.” I studied the office of the American presidency in college and it was widely agreed in academia that the presidency during its heyday rose above the level of mere political office. It’s more than the highest office. The presidency is a modern monarchy wrapped in democracy. It’s where the buck stops, where the highest expectations and hopes of the free world used to be pinned. One person could be a hero that saves the world and actually has the power to do it. Whether or not an individual president actually lives up to the role doesn’t matter as much as knowing that we, Americans, can elect someone into the office who will be our savior.
But Trump is the end of the imperial presidency. He’s turned the office into something laughable, below respect.
No one person can stand against the powers that be. The Pope is now merely the “Bishop of Rome,” first among equals. The other top office of power, the American presidency, will never again have the prestige or respect or ability for one person to stand up and say “enough is enough!” We have no heroes left, no individuals who will stand up for what is right and have the power to oppose the groupthink and mediocrity that characterizes the modern world. (The closest thing we have to a hero on the world stage is Vladimir Putin, who prevented WW3 from starting in Syria, and yes I realize how ridiculous it is to call Putin a hero.) And I think this is by design. An ultrapowerful elite that want to completely rule the world have picked off everyone and everything that can oppose them. Read the book “Windswept House.” Heroes go against the consensus when they have to. Groups are too prone to slippery compromises.
And so ends democracy and freedom and egalitarian values. Our heroes have fallen. The hungry wolves will eat of the last bit of value left in the land and its people then use their robot armies to kill off the masses that rise up against them. But I digress….
